How to teach a conversation class? (Part-1)

Thanks God that I got a new opportunity to teach a conversation class which is a private class, so it will be like having a usual conversation in English. I hope I can do well since it is new for me. However, let's get started! Here, I want to write about the materials, the resources I used and many other things. Hope you can enjoy and get some benefits, :)

It took me almost 2 hours just to find an appropriate materials to teach an English conversation. I realized that I need to find a topic first to start the discussion, so then I searched the topic for basic conversation. Finally, I got it from spoken English practice website. There are 10 topics that we can use for beginner, i.e., school or work, grocery shopping, cooking, home, family, pets, weather, clothing, friends, and travel. I will follow this website suggestion, first must be about the school. It will be interesting for the students, I hope.

I arranged my lesson plan then,

  1. Introduce myself; My name, my age, my educational background, and my address.
  2. I will give them the pretest first; I give them a card which has some keywords about self-introduction, such as name, age, educational background, hobbies, and dreams.
  3. After getting their information. I will ask some questions related to their introduction.
  4. The discussion will be going with the school topic, I will ask about their opinion or their experiences in their schools; namely, their favorite teachers, their close friends, and their favorite subjects. In this case, they need to explain their reasons.
  5. I will teach some vocabularies based on the article, here the article I used is from The Guardian, the topic is wannacry ransomware, you can find the article here
  6. I will examine their abilities in grammar by testing grammar rules about the use of preposition (in, on, and at)
For the grammar study about the preposition in, at, and on I used the resources from TalkEnglish.com

I also got some good learning English resources from these two websites,
  • You can get the real-time quiz or the audio in manythings.org
  • You can get so many pdf files about some English lesson in esflow.com
Here, I want to share 3 lines of daily chit-chat from one book by Stenny Vannesa Oey (2000 lines of reality English),
  1. She delivered a baby girl yesterday morning (Dia melahirkan seorang bayi perempuan kemarin pagi)
  2. She gave birth a baby boy last year (Dia melahirkan anak lelaki tahun lalu)
  3. I am afraid our relationship is too good to be true (Aku khawatir hubungan kita terlalu muluk)
